What Is Thalidomide?
Thalidomide is a sedative and hypnotic medication.
This drug was developed by the German pharmaceutical company Grunenthal. It was sold from 1957 to 1961 in almost 50 countries under at least 40 different names.
Thalidomide was prescribed and sold mainly to pregnant women to combat morning sickness and as an aid to help them sleep.
Before the drug was released, inadequate tests were performed to assess Thalidomide's safety; which had catastrophic consequences for the children of women who had taken Thalidomide during their pregnancy.
From 1956 to 1962, approximately 10,000 children were born with severe malformations, including missing limbs, malformation of inner organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys to name only a few.
