Ever since she can remember, Sabine had the need to be creative. If it was drawing, photography or weaving, the urge for being creative, followed her throughout her life.
Living in Alaska from 1988-2003 she worked with the Alaskan Natives, and discovered how resilient they are, despite the hard winters, social problems and unemployment.
The event, which led to the creation of the "Spirit Dancers", was the Alaskan Spirit Dance, performed by a native Elder.
The Spirit Dance was part of the celebration to welcome Spring after the passing of the very harsh Alaskan winter.
The village Elder was dressed in a beautiful, hand sewn leather costume, beaded necklaces, a crown of feathers and his face was covered by a handcrafted "Spirit Mask".
The Dance was not only a celebration of the arrival of Spring, but it was also a Dance of Affirmation for overcoming obstacles!
This message in particular inspired Sabine to create her own version of the Spirit Dancer.
She sewed her tiny Spirit People from leather, dressed them in miniature tunics, beaded their necklaces and giving each of them a small bear fetish, which symbolizes strength.
A crown of pheasant and grouse feathers decorated their head and she crafted the Spirit Mask from fallen moose or caribou antler.
Sabine has sold successfully her Spirit Dancers at Art shows and Museums throughout Alaska, Washington, California and New Mexico.
Although they have changed slightly over the years, their message is still the same:
" Life will always present us with challenges and unique situations. We have the
choice how we react. We can blame others for our circumstances or find courage,
strength and determination to face life's challenges! "
